A drunken soldier in DR Congo’s restive east opened fire on innocent passers-by, killing at least 12 people and sparking angry protests.
A two-year-old girl was among the victims.
The incident happened late Thursday at Sange,in the South Kivu province.
Speaking to journalists,the army’s spokesman in Sange said the gunan was on the run and still armed.
An army delegation and a UN team is in the area to calm the population, which has revolted against the army
Angry residents blocked the main highway and displayed the 12 bodies, wrapped in funeral shrouds, at a busy crossroads, blocking traffic, according to witnesses.
Sange is located 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province.
The highway connects Uvira, the province’s second-largest town, with the border with Burundi.
