France head coach Didier Deschamps called up three players of African descent, Houssem Aouar, Eduardo Camavinga and Dayot Upamecano. Aouar, Camavinga and Upamecano are of Algeria, Angola and Guinea-Bissau descent respectively.
The players have been handed their first Le Bleus call-ups ahead of the team’s UEFA Nations League matches. France is to play against Sweden and Croatia on the coming month.
Aouar, 22, is an attacking midfielder while Camavinga, a 17-year-old Angola-born is a central midfielder. Upamecano, 21, is a touch-tackling central defender.
“Aouar has technical skills, he is able to score goals. Camavinga has an influence despite his young age. Upamecano is a player we’ve been following for a long time,” Deschamps said.
This has been seen as another ploy by France to use African players. France is one of the top footballing nations with players of African origin.
