A huge blast rocked a military base in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Saturday morning, killing at least eight people and injuring 14.
“It must be a suicide car bomb, we are now transporting casualties,” said Army officer Major Abdullahi Mohamud while confirming it was an attack.
Deadly violence has rocked Somalia since 1991, when clan warlords overthrew leader Siad Barre and then turned on each other. The militant group al Shabaab has been fighting to overthrow the internationally-recognized central government and establish its rule based on its own strict interpretation of sharia law.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
